Logbook of the World

The ARRL might be surprised that such a low number of hams currently use their Logbook of the World. I'm not surprised, and neither are a lot of other people who just don't "get it". The ARRL, in their search to keep things "ligitimate" have created a program that is overly complex and unnecessarily manual. What do I mean by that? What other computer program requires first-time users to wait for someone to MANUALLY and in REGULAR MAIL send them a postcard? That's a little ridiculous.

Now, I use LOTW and have for a while. However, my computer crashed and their directions may as well have been written by a second grader. Sorry ARRL, but this is the poorest run blunder of a good idea since New Coke. Don't send me "what you need to do is" -emails or instructions. I know, and I'm fixing my issue because I have experience with computers and have been a ham for a while now. But what about a new ham? Or what about a very old ham? Or what about a ham without much computer experience? They're in trouble! Why? Because the ARRL hasn't figured out a way to make things secure without forcing us to jump through hoops. Sorry, but it's true.

So, here's my memorandum to the league: hire someone who has some training in electronic security AND radio, make sure they have half a brain in their head, make sure they have common sense, and pay them more. Obviously they currently are not doing these things. The program is awful and a serious pain the butt. If they want more participants (and I do -- more participants means more of my QSO's become QSL's) they'll need to increase the accessibility.

I'll volunteer. ARRL, if you don't have someone, I'll do it. I hate to see such a powerful idea being wasted so stupidly.
